Workout games for iPhone: how camera fitness works without extra gear

By Skerdi Berberi, founder of Reps Race · Reviewed

Quick answer

Modern iPhones can track 33 body landmarks at 30 frames a second right on the device, turning your body into the controller with no console, watch or headset. In Reps Race, you prop up your phone and play four games across 160 levels—Catch the Dots, Squats, Push-ups and Jumping Jacks—solo or live against friends.

Four camera games across 160 levels: 64 levels of Catch the Dots and 32 levels each for Squats, Push-ups and Jumping Jacks.

Four games you play with your body

Each round lasts 30 to 60 seconds, so you can play a single round between tasks or string together a full session.

  1. Catch the Dots · 8 worlds (64 levels)

    30–60 s · Reach & reaction

Dots spawn inside your arm's reach while skulls drift across the screen. Touch dots with either hand before they vanish and dodge every skull (-2 points). Later worlds shrink the dots and bounce them like pinballs.

  2. Squats · 4 worlds (32 levels)

    30–60 s · Lower body

Stand sideways so Hop tracks your hip-to-knee angle. Only full squats past 65 degrees of thigh tilt count; lunges, forward waist bends and shallow half-reps are filtered out.

  3. Push-ups · 4 worlds (32 levels)

    30–60 s · Upper body

Set your phone on the floor side-on or in front of you. Hop checks that you hold a real plank, lower past a 90-degree elbow bend, and lock out past 150 degrees.

  4. Jumping Jacks · 4 worlds (32 levels)

    30–60 s · Cardio

Step back so your whole body fits in view. Every rep checks that both hands pass nose height while your feet jump wider than 1.3× shoulder width.

Make it harder next week

Climb the weekly Friends and World ranks (This week's reps resets every Monday at midnight UTC) and earn XP to level up and collect new player card styles and titles in Hop's locker.

Train safely

Not medical advice. Check with a doctor before starting a new exercise program. Warm up, clear the space around you, and stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness or shortness of breath. If you have a health condition or an injury, or are pregnant, ask your doctor which moves suit you.

Questions

Does a camera workout game record or upload video of my room?

In Reps Race, no video or image is ever saved or uploaded. The pose model runs directly on your iPhone at around 30 frames a second and discards each frame immediately after finding your joint positions.

How do live races with friends work without sending video?

When you race a friend in Reps Race, the phones only exchange your score and the coordinates of 12 body points about ten times a second so your friend sees a simple stick-figure outline moving alongside theirs.

Do I need a tripod or special sensor?

No. Prop your iPhone against a water bottle, mug or book on a desk, chair or the floor. If you step out of frame mid-round, the round clock waits up to 15 seconds for you to step back in.
